Welcome to my creative playground, where bits, atoms and pixels come alive.

Karan Tanna

Interaction Designer · Creative Technologist

Hello there, I’m Karan – an architect turned interaction designer on a mission to craft experiences that resonate with the soul. My journey unfolds at the intersection of accessibility and innovation, where meaningful interactions elevates the human life. I believe in the transformative power of design, a force that goes beyond aesthetics to empower individuals and steer humanity towards a positive direction. Every pixel and atom has a purpose, that leaves an indelible mark on the human experience.

Laval Virtual Conference, France

Got selected to present our AR/VR project ‘Fusion’ work at Laval Virtual 2024 Conference in France.

My work is diverse and spread across disciplines like Interaction Design, Architecture, Immersive Media Design, Protography, Visual Arts, Machine Design and more. Here is a curated collection of UI/UX, Tangible Interaction, Visual Arts, Experimental Projects and more. Hope you find it interesting.

Generative Art
This project aims at generating visuals using mathematical algorithms and formulae using Processing and JavaScript coding. In this particular exploration I tried to generate moving images through particle system behaving in certain way drawing inspiration from Chaos Equation.
Kawach Insurance App
A revolutionary health insurance venture for a new entrant that transforms the traditionally negative perception of health insurance into a positive, frequently engaging experience, with a focus on simplicity, clarity, and a compelling value proposition to increase widespread adoption.
3D Form Exploration
This project is aimed at developing 3D forms through composing and manipulating 2D & 3D shapes and forms in order to achieve interesting 3D forms. At the later stage a 3D abstract form was developed by getting inspired from the nature.
Koishi : Interactions with Pebbles
This three week long tangible interaction project explores the tangible attributes of pebbles and metaphorically translating natural interaction with pebbles with tangible user interface. In this project we explored three interactions and used light to demonstrate those interactions. However, they are not just limited to those. These can be applied to various other areas.
Fusion : Exploring XR Interactions
Fusion, that is File Transfer and Universal Sync for Immersive & Other Networks is an XR project focused on making one handed interactions which cater to sync between virtual and non-immersive platforms / devices.
Study of Menus Across Smartwatch Displays
In this project we studied five major menu types in smart watch displays across two types of displays ie. circular and rectangular. We conducted a research study and investigated if there is a significant difference between those menus during the span of two weeks as part of academic project.
Usability Evaluation : Phone Pe
In this research study, we analysed Phone Pe app with users and conducted usability evaluation of Phone Pe Mobile App. We conducted this study during the span of two weeks as a part of academics.
Ethicity
Ethicity is an app that allows users to track their daily carbon footprint and emissions. They get AI based suggestions and promt to attain sustainable lifestyle and get rewards as well. This project was done as part of course Interaction, Media & Sciences.
Design Fiction : Bionic Human Society
What If...the world becomes increasingly complex, competitive and unpredictable due to AI, and humans turn to bionic implants as a means of self-preservation? This spectulative design explores the future of humanity with the help of digetic prototype of Bionic Human Society, in an era where humans are able to use machines to enhance their biological capabilities.
Bandhu AI
Mental health is an important part of life along with physical health. IITB students go through a lot of academic and social pressure. Hence it becomes important to take steps for the psycological wellbeing of them. This project was done as part of the course 'Advanced Service Design'.
5 Decades of Internet : Data Visualisation
Internet speeds have grown exponentially since its inception. In just 5 decades it has grown more than a million times. However it is hard to visualise just through numbers and hence this will help audience to associate numbers with familiar attributes. This was done during the course 'Interactive Data Visualisation' in 2023.
Amazon Pay Redesign
Amazon Shopping App also consists of an Amazon Pay feature inside it. However, the time taken by users and steps made by users make it very cumbersome to use even if the service is good and beneficial to the user in the long run. Making a stand alone app or section will enhance the user experience and also increase the use of shopping platforms because of relevant rewards. This project was done as a part of UX Design Certification by Google in 2021.
Travel Quest
Design and implement a user-centric backend tool for TravelQuest Experiences, empowering employees to efficiently evaluate, manage, and curate user-submitted activities. The goal is to enhance the overall workflow, streamline the approval process, and provide intuitive curation tools, ensuring a seamless and visually appealing experience that aligns with TravelQuest's brand identity.
ArcGIS Dashboard
To understand the existing ‘Realtime Data Dashboard of Hong Kong’ and analyse it through UX principles, find pain points and usability challenges. Redesign the dashboard along with visual system or style guide.
Gesture Based Tangible Maze
This tangible interaction project was done during the module called 'Machine Design' of the diploma course called 'How to make almost anything' taught by Dr. Neil Gershenfeld, Director of Center of Bits and Atom, MIT, USA. The module was split over two weeks, where I made an LED Maze which can be controlled using accelerometer or joystick. It used dual axis mechanism. and the movement in Z axis was primary in this case.
DOM·US Heritage Lamp
This project was done during internship at SR+A, Mumbai. Inspired by ‘domes’ of Indo-Islamic architecture, this product symbolizes brotherhood with Identical surfaces facing each other. Also as the name suggests, DOM.US celebrates the heritage and embraces unity and enlightens the spirit of togetherness. This was presented at Dialogues 2019 event.
The Second Hand : A Wearable for Paralysis Patients
The second hand is a tangible interaction project which aims to help enhancing the movement to grab objects for paralysed fingers. The project was done as diploma graduation project of 'How to make almost anything' taught by Prof. Neil Gershenfeld, Director of Center of Bits and Atom, MIT, USA.
Photography
Photography has shaped how I see the world, the things that I observe and the sense I make out of it or the stories that I weave out of it. The journey really took a new leap when I did a course on 'Photography : Learning to See' during my exchange semester in Israel. This section contains few od the photographs I took so far.
Design Discovery Map : Ahmedabad City
Ahmedabad has dozens of buildings built by legendary architects including BV Doshi, Louis Khan, Corbusier, etc. This map consists of the location of these places and signular route which an art / history / design enthusiast may follow to while their visit to Ahmedabad. This was done as a part of the course Data Visualisation.
Accessible Board Game : Reviving Pallanguzhi
Games have played an important role in growth of humanity historically. However, blind people do not get opportunities to socially and play games like sighted people. I interacted with blind users and studied their lives and tried to understand them a bit through this project. I took vanishing traditional game of pallanuzhi and made an blind friendly version of pallanguzhi with modified gameplay.
